Product Story

About Organic Enshi Yulu

🍵 Tea Name: Organic Enshi Yulu

📍 Terroir & Origin

  • Precise Origin: Enshi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, Hubei Province. Core production areas include Wufeng Mountain, Tunbao, and Bajiao in the suburbs of Enshi City.
  • Altitude & Environment: Located between 800 and 1,200 meters above sea level. This region sits on the eastern extension of the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau, characterized by persistent mist and abundant scattered light, which facilitates amino acid accumulation.
  • Soil Characteristics: The soil is primarily selenium-rich purple-sand soil. As Enshi is known as the "World Capital of Selenium," organic tea gardens strictly prohibit chemical fertilizers, relying entirely on mineral nutrients from deep soil and organic cycling. This results in tea naturally rich in organic selenium.
  • Cultivar: Mainly the local Enshi Quntizhong (heritage population variety), with some use of Changye Baihao.

🌱 Plucking Standards

  • Harvest Timing: Mingqian (Pre-Qingming) or Yuqian (Pre-Rain). Because organic tea grows more slowly, the Pre-Qingming harvest is exceptionally rare and prized.
  • Requirements: Extremely strict. The standard is one bud with one newly unfurled leaf or one bud with two leaves. Buds must be uniform in length, size, and color. Damaged, purple, or rain-soaked leaves are strictly excluded.

🔥 Processing Techniques

The processing of Enshi Yulu is a national intangible cultural heritage, centered on "Steaming."

  1. Steam Blanching (Shaqing): Using steam at approximately 100°C to rapidly deactivate enzymes. Unlike pan-fired green teas, this preserves maximum chlorophyll, resulting in the signature "Three Greens" profile.
  2. Cooling & Fanning: Immediate cooling with strong air currents to remove heat and moisture, preventing the leaves from turning yellow.
  3. Rolling & Rest: Physical rolling breaks cell walls to ensure tea juices extract easily during brewing.
  4. Shaping & Polishing (Crucial Step): Using complex hand techniques like "opposing rolling" and "twisting" on a specialized heated stove to mold the leaves into a needle-like shape, resembling pine needles.
  5. Final Drying: Conducted in stages to reduce moisture below 5%, fixing the unique "seaweed-like" fresh aroma.

👅 Tasting Notes

  • Appearance: Tightly rolled, round, thin, and straight. The color is deep emerald green with visible silvery pekoe. It resembles fine pine needles.
  • Liquor Color: Crystal clear and bright, exhibiting a vibrant tender green hue.
  • Aroma & Taste:
    • Aroma: Fresh and clean. High-grade organic Yulu reveals subtle notes of seaweed or fresh bean fragrance.
    • Palate: Exceptional Umami and freshness, followed by a quick and sweet aftertaste (Huigan). Due to organic cultivation, the liquor has a thick texture without bitterness and a long-lasting throat charm.
  • Infused Leaves: Tender green and uniform; the leaves are soft to the touch and remain structurally intact.

🫖 Brewing & Storage

  • Recommended Brewing:
    • Teaware: Tall transparent glass (to observe the "dance" of the needles) or white porcelain Gaiwan.
    • Water Temperature: 80°C - 85°C. Avoid boiling water to prevent scalding the delicate buds, which leads to yellow liquor and bitterness.
    • Tea-to-Water Ratio: 1:50 (e.g., 3g of tea for 150ml of water).
    • Steeping Time: 30-45 seconds for the first infusion, adding 15 seconds for subsequent steeps. The Middle-drop or Top-drop method is recommended.
  • Storage & Shelf Life:
    • Environment: Sealed, protected from light, moisture, and strong odors.
    • Shelf Life: Best consumed within 36 months. As it is an unfermented organic green tea, refrigerated storage (0-5°C) is ideal for preserving its "freshness."
